Lau Mau Airlines

A flight simulator in your browser. You start in the cockpit at the south end of Runway 36 with the gear down.

Controls

Flight keys

KeyAction
AThrust (hold). Thrust stays set when you let go.
ZReverse thrust (hold)
GLanding gear
FFlaps. Each press steps through 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20, then back to 0.
← →Rudder. In the air this also banks the jet into the turn.
BWheel brakes (hold)

Added pitch control

KeyAction
↑ ↓Pitch the nose up and down. Pitch holds where you leave it and snaps level near zero.

Cockpit

The view is first-person from inside the jet. The instruments are:

  • Airspeed indicator, altimeter and attitude indicator.
  • A status strip showing gear lights, flaps, thrust, heading, vertical speed, distance to the field and brakes.
  • The field readout on the strip gives the bearing and distance to the nearest of the three airports.

World

  • Airfield: a runway with lights and markings, taxiways, a control tower with a blinking beacon, a terminal, hangars and fuel tanks.
  • Surroundings: roads and a highway run through the valley, with a downtown of buildings ahead.
  • Terrain: mountains up to about 3,900 m rise on both sides.

Airports

There are three runways, all the same size with the same markings and lights.

AirportLocationFacilities
Start field Runway 36, where you begin. Taxiways, control tower with beacon, terminal, hangars, fuel tanks.
North field 15 miles (about 24 km) north of the start. Its center is about 25.6 km north, on flat ground beyond the mountains. About 2 minutes of flying at 150 knots. Parallel taxiway, apron, terminal, hangars and control tower. The highway runs out to it.
Mountain field On the west mountain top, about 7.5 km west and 9 km north of the start. The plateau is about 2,830 m (roughly 9,300 ft) above sea level. Small apron, control tower and hangar. The summit strip is flattened, with slopes blending down on each side.

The slopes just past the mountain runway ends are steep, so line up early. Engine thrust drops a little at that height, so allow extra runway on takeoff.

Runway lights are hard to see through the haze until you are within several miles.

Flying and landing

  • Flaps lower the stall speed. A landing with flaps at 20 is the easiest.
  • Warnings call out STALL, PULL UP and GEAR.
  • A touchdown reports your vertical speed.
  • You crash if you hit terrain or a building, land with the gear up, or land too hard.
  • Wheel and brake behavior is the same at every airport.
  • Landing on the mountain runway does not count as hitting terrain, and the PULL UP alarm is quiet near that runway so you can make an approach.

Takeoff

  1. Set flaps to 10 by pressing F until it reads 10.
  2. Hold A for full thrust.
  3. Press ↑ at about 130 knots.
  4. Raise the gear with G.

Sound

Sound covers the engine rumble, warning beeps, gear and touchdown thuds, and the crash boom. Press S to turn all of it on or off. A short "Sound ON/OFF" message appears on screen. The key works while flying and while paused.

Notes

  • To stay within the build's size limit, the game leaves out trees, clouds, parked airliners, houses and window textures on the buildings.
  • The game has not yet been flown in a browser. Handling may need tuning, such as pitch speed, takeoff speed or turn rate.
